Do you have a favorite yarn you like to use when crocheting shawls? Mine is Estelle Worsted. (50% Acrylic,40% Wool, 10% Nylon, 219 yards / 200 meters, 3.53 ounces / 100 grams)
It's labelled as worsted, but it's dk. It sure would be nice if yarn companies could agree on what weight is worsted and what weight is dk.... just a suggestion :)
I discovered the Estelle yarn about a year ago and have used it quite a bit lately. It's easy to work with, doesn't split, stands up well to a lot of unravelling, and has a nice drape for shawls.
Since I'm in Canada it can be a bit difficult to purchase. Most of the time I was buying it on YarnCanada.ca but a few weeks ago I found a new Canadian website that had more colors! Artisanthropy.ca
Estelle also has a website with even more colors, might have to buy some the next time I'm in the US and save on some shipping costs.
Unfortunately the shawls do get a bit expensive since most of them take 5 - 6 skeins of yarn to create, so $50 - $60 CND per shawl. I end up donating the shawls since I haven't been able to find a place to sell them. I think I will have to switch yarns for donated shawls that makes them still lovely, but more affordable.
Another favorite is Willow Yarns Denim Grace. It's a beautiful yarn with lovely drape for shawls. I would love to make a baby blanket with it as well. Again it can only be purchased at Herrschners and their shipping to Canada is crazy. You can save a bit buy purchasing a Bag of 5, but it's all one color. They used to have a sampler color pack, but I can't find it any more. Might have to order a bag of 5 when I'm in the US and they have free shipping to US states only.
Other yarns that are really nice for shawls are the Stylecraft Special dk that can be purchased at the Wool Warehouse and also Love Crafts. I have ordered from both online stores with great luck, though usually Love Crafts is out of 1/2 of the colors. Since I'm in Canada it takes 2 weeks for me to get an order from either the US or the UK.... so lately I have been ordering from the Wool Warehouse because they have the colors I want. The Special DK works out to about $15 - $20 CND for a shawl.
Another option I haven't used in quite a while but will use again is Premier Basix dk. It can be purchased at herrschners.com. It's actually not a bad dk, maybe not as soft as the Stylecraft dk, but it works. I'm not a fan of the Premier Basix Worsted, it's not very soft. The dk is much nicer and very affordable, it works out to about $15 - $20 CND per shawl.
There are some of the yarns I've used for shawls. Hopefully this helps you a bit.
Do you have a favorite yarn for shawls? I would love to hear about it!
So am I, I am in AB an I got an email for free shipping for this weekend?
I like Mary Maxim Value yarn for Blankets it is very soft, so I am sure it would be great for shawls, i however seem to pick shawls that use fingering weight yarn and so do people who want me to make them shawls 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
