The Magic Circle Crochet Stitch

Updated: Dec 30, 2023

If you are creating a top-down beanie, starting a blanket in the round, or even a 1/2 round or triangle shawl you are going to want to learn the Magic Circle stitch (MC).

When I first started to crochet I would chain a few then join the ends of the chain to create a circle, but that leaves a hole at the top of the beanie/blanket/shawl. Doesn't look nice at all. With the MC you can make a nice tidy center.

It took me a while to find a way to create the MC that wasn't complicated, didn't want to have to watch a video every time I made the MC. I'm just not patient enough for that lol. Did you know there are hundreds of videos on Youtube about the MC?! Oh my gosh! I have no idea how many I watched until I found one that made sense to me.

BerceauKnits has a video on Youtube that finally clicked for me. This is how I make the MC.

There are so many other ways to make the circle. Here are a few others that I found, they looked a bit complicated to me, but they might work for you or be the way you make a MC.

There are many more videos all doing the same as above.

How do you make the MC? Do you create it like one of the videos above? Or do you do it different than everyone?

Thanks for sharing that video! I do the magic circle with the yarn wrapped around my fingers but always find it awkward trying to get my hook inside the loop that way. I will try this method next time, it seems less awkward.
