Do you ever just scroll IG and look at yarn posted there? I do once in a while if I have time. Saw a post with some yarn by Yarnsmiths. Never tried their yarn before, it looked pretty, so I went to WoolWarehouse to check it out. Ended up ordering 3 types of yarn in a few colors each.
Let's start with this yarn.
YARNSMITHS Play Chunky (100% Acrylic, 202 yards / 185 meters, 3.5 ounces / 100 grams) Colors: 1G005, 1G002, 1G003, 1G010
First Impressions:
They sure have some really pretty colors. It was quite difficult picking just 4 colors. (you can see all the colors HERE) It's a bit difficult to see what the colors really look like the way they are displayed on the website, but I picked a few that were totally different.
In my opinion.... it's not chunky yarn, it's worsted weight. I used this yarn to re-do an old pattern (Rustic Ridges). The original pattern was created with Red Heart Colorscapes which is a worsted weight yarn, and this yarn crochets the beanie in the same size. So.... not chunky. It calls for a 6 mm crochet hook, but I will use a 5.5 mm, probably could even use a 5 mm. I would compare it to Caron One Pound.
Feels quite soft in the skein.
Impressions while crocheting:
When you start crocheting with the yarn it feels like it crochets as a chunky yarn. I think that's because it's not smooth. It doesn't make the beanie larger than the worsted weight yarn though.
It's a bit grippy. Not sure how you wrap the yarn around your hand. My grandma tried to teach me to knit when I was young (didn't work), so I wrap the yarn the way my grandma taught me. It's around my pinky finger, then over my pointing finger. I think because the yarn isn't "smooth" it gripped my pinky more than I am used to. It was a bit annoying. Had to pull more often than I'm used to.
It does make a soft project. The beanies will be cozy and warm. The one skein had a knot in the middle and the wrong color was attached. Because I'm donating the beanie I kept going, but if I had wanted to sell the beanie it would have been very disappointing. As you can see in the photo.... the bottom of the beanie should be purple.
Over all it's nice yarn. There is enough on 1 skein to make a large beanie.
The colors are fun :)
Would I buy it again? Probably not. This was an impulse purchase because I wanted to try some new yarn. If someone asked me about a "chunky" yarn with fun colors, I would definitely mention this yarn. For someone who likes chunky yarn, fun colors & smaller projects it's a great option.
You can find the beanie pattern I created with this yarn on Ravelry & Etsy for 30% off until the end of December 2024!
